Replacing your vehicles timing belt is part of the regular auto service and maintenance, and should be performed between 70,000-110,000 miles based on make and model of the vehicle.
What Does a Timing Belt Do?
A timing belt is a key component of an internal combustion engine. It synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine’s valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is usually a toothed belt or a drive belt with teeth on the inner surface.
The crankshaft moves pistons up for compression and exhaust cycles, while the pistons move down during power and intake cycles. In most vehicles, the timing belt would also drive the water pump, oil pump and injection pump. The camshaft controls the opening and closing of the valves for intake and exhaust. The valves must open at the correct time to allow fuel to enter the chamber and then close to allow for compression. If the timing cycle is off, fuel may not enter the cylinder or could escape through an open exhaust valve. If the valves are not fully closed during compression, the engine would experience power loss.
Signs of a Failing Timing Belt?
- Difficulty starting the engine
- Engine misfiring and shaking while driving
- Losing grip on the road while driving
- Oil leak from the front of the engine
- Thick smoke from exhaust
- Hot-running engine
Replacing the Timing Belt
Normally, a timing belt should last between six and eight years under normal driving conditions (between 70,000-100,000 miles).
Its recommended that during the timing belt replacement, you also get a few other parts that work with the belt replaced including the water pump, belt tensioner, and the pulleys. This would be a good time to consider other major services like replacement of spark plugs.
