Mission Viejo

Mission Viejo is in South Orange County, California, within the Saddleback Valley. It is considered to be one of the largest master-planned communities ever built under a single project in the United States, and is rivaled only by Highlands Ranch, Colorado. The city is known for its tree-lined neighborhoods, receiving recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation. The city is named as a reference to Rancho Mission Viejo, a large Spanish land grant from which the community was founded. Homes and other structures in Mission Viejo are most universally designed in Spanish mission-style motif. Largely undeveloped until the 1970s due to its hilly contour, the area now comprising Mission Viejo was used in the early part of the 20th century mostly for sheep and cattle grazing.
