The main purpose of axle is to transfer power from the engine and transmission to the wheels. Axles also serve to bear the weight of the vehicle and its passengers and cargo. Even though axles are built to be tough, an overloaded vehicle can sometimes crack or break an axle. A broken or damaged axle can cause control issues with your vehicle, so it is crucial to have them repaired as soon as possible. Bad carrier bearings or potholes are the common causes of axle problems.
If you encounter any of the following indicators of axle issues, it is time to have the professionals at your trusted local auto repair shop for check your vehicle.
Clicking or Clunking when turning
The most common sign of axle problem is a clicking or clunking noise that occurs while turning or cornering. This will happen if the joints become loose. In general, the clicking will become more audible and occur at a higher rate when making sharper turns or when cornering at higher speeds.
Power Loss
Vehicle seems to struggle to get power or move as it starts to accelerate. If this is accompanied by loud clunking noise it may also be indicative of transmission issues.
Grease Leak
Leaking grease on the inner edge of tire or underneath the vehicle can indicate a leaking axle or CV boot; the rubber cover over the drive axle joint or CV joint. Although a leaking axle boot does not indicate that the axle has been damaged, a leaky boot and loss of grease could lead to CV joint failure, resulting in a need for replacement. Any leaking axle boot should be repaired right away to prevent a more serious failure to the axle system.
Excessive Vibration
Sharp vehicle vibrations after a collision or running in to a pothole, or other objects may indicate axle damage. Vibrations could be accompanied by an unusual clunking noise underneath the vehicle, or slow steering, which may indicate a damaged axle.
Going Nowhere Fast
If the vehicle goes nowhere, even though it starts fine, goes into gear, and has a normal engine sound, it most likely had a broken axle at the universal joint. No matter how much you press the gas pedal, the engine only revs, and the vehicle does not move.
Axles are an essential component of a well-functioning automobile and auto safety as the engine, transmission, steering system, brakes, and tires. You should be aware of the crucial role of drive axles and have them checked during vehicle regular maintenance. If an axle does get damaged, have a reputable technician repair it promptly.
