Car radiators are an indispensable part of your vehicle’s cooling system. Your engine generates power through fuel combustion, a process that generates a considerable amount of heat. The engine includes many moving parts, all of which create friction and heat. Your radiator disperses heat away from the engine thus preventing your engine from overheating and failure. Keeping your radiator in good condition will maximize the lifespan of your automobile.
For optimum performance your car’s engine should be operating at 195–200 degrees Fahrenheit. The care thermostat operates by allowing the flow of water and coolant around the car engine and back to the radiator where the heat is reduced due to the cooler surrounding air. This happens when the engine gets too hot and reaches a temperature above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
A radiator flush should be done every other year, or every 40,000 to 60,000 miles to insure a properly operating cooling system.
A common cause of costly engine failure is overheating. Luckily, overheating is preventable by taking care of your radiator and engine cooling system.
Typical Radiator and Cooling System Issues
Clogged Radiator – One of the most common issues with radiators involve dirt or loose debris clogging the radiator channels. These things can block up the fluid flow through the radiator which results in overheating. If your car is overheating despite normal coolant levels, have your radiator checked to see if the radiator is blocked.
Leaks – Your car’s cooling system has many gaskets, hoses, and seals. As these parts deteriorate and get brittle over time or get damaged, you end up having leaks. Holes or cracks in the rubber coolant hoses in your engine and cooling system could cause coolant leak.
Rusty Radiator Fluid – Rusty radiator fluid is an indication that your radiator might be gummed up. Our technicians would give your radiator a thorough flash out, change the coolant, and more importantly, bleed the cooling system to take care of any air pockets.
Faulty Thermostat – A blocked or faulty thermostat would slowdown the flow of coolant and cause overheating.
Faulty Water Pump – The water pump is the heart of the engine’s cooling system. Its job is to constantly circulate the coolant throughout the entire cooling circuit and thus regulate the coolant flow rate.
